Hey there! We’re Richard and Kathleen, the husband-wife duo behind Bordr.
We used to live in the San Francisco Bay Area and both worked in tech. In 2016, we quit our jobs to go independent and started a web design business called Designstaq. After running it for a couple of years, we realized that we had not met any of our clients in person and that we could actually work from anywhere.
So, in 2018, we packed up our bags and sold our belongings. We left California to try out the digital nomad lifestyle. Needless to say, we loved it so much that we never went back! Over the next two years, we traveled the world and made new friends in amazing places like Chiang Mai, Taipei, Tokyo, Berlin, Medellin, and Porto.
Towards the end of 2019, we decided that while we loved the nomadic lifestyle, we wanted to slow down and find a semi-permanent place to call home. That’s when we discovered Portugal and decided to apply for the D7 (Passive Income) visa.
In January 2020, we flew to NYC to visit Richard’s sister and took the train down to DC. We handed in our application to the VFS office in Washington DC and arrived in Lisbon in February 2020.
Over the next several months, we started to get acquainted with life in Portugal. To be fair, we still don’t feel like we know the country as well as we’d like due to Covid being around for most of our stay so far. In any case, we digress. We went through all the paperwork that you must be going through now. We got our NIFs, set up a bank account, signed up for health insurance, registered with the SNS – list goes on.
After experiencing the hassles of getting our lives set up in Portugal, we thought that we could offer a better experience for others moving to Portugal. Bordr is the outcome of those early discussions and we’re excited to be able to offer a service that we wish existed when we were going through the process of setting up life here in sunny Portugal.
If you have any questions at all, send us a message. We'd love to hear from you!
